Austin knocked out of Top 4 cities by thriving North Texas metro

There’s no doubt the Capital City is continuing to grow, but new data suggests it’s not growing quite as fast as other cities in Texas and nationwide. For two consecutive years, a North Texas city has beat out Austin in the largest U.S. city rankings.

Population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday, May 15, reveal that Fort Worth overtook Austin once again to become the fourth-largest city in Texas. Nationally, Austin dropped to the 13th-largest city, falling further behind its past rankings in recent years.

In 2022, Austin was the 10th-largest U.S. city, but slipped to 11th in 2024. This year, at 13, it’s now lower than Fort Worth, which surpassed over 1 million residents…
