When I was chronicling the timeless battle for the heart and soul of the puffy taco in San Antonio a few years back, I was minding my own business at Ray’s Drive Inn when a guy at another table leaned over and said, “If you want a really good puffy taco, you should go to Oscar’s.”
For him, for the shop’s 30 employees, and for me — because Oscar’s Taco House holds a place in my ranking of the city’s Top 10 Puffy Tacos — the news isn’t good. Owner Alex Pruneda has confirmed that Oscar’s, a Southwest Side destination for puffy tacos since 1962, will close for good June 28 as the city prepares to build a railroad overpass at Zarzamora Street.

“They’ve been trying to build a bridge over the tracks right here, because they’re saying it backs up traffic whenever the train stops,” Pruneda said. “They’ve been talking about it for years now, and they finally came out, I guess, with a solution.”…
