Iconic 10-foot mascot leaves San Antonio seafood spot for first time in 60 years

For the first time in 60 years, a longstanding San Antonio restaurant will be without its iconic mascot at the helm.

Jolly Jack, the 10-foot sea captain statue standing tall in front of the original Sea Island Shrimp House location by North Star Mall, was taken off-site for some much-needed repairs and reinforcement, according to a press release sent out on Tuesday, June 24.

“After braving decades of Texas heat, rainstorms, and generations of photo ops, Jolly Jack needs some repairs,” the release stated. “Longtime fans have watched Jolly Jack change a bit over the years — his colors have shifted, other details have come and gone — but this restoration will return him to his original 1965 appearance, just in time for Sea Island Shrimp House’s 60th anniversary year.”…
