Fireworks sales are beginning in outlying areas around San Antonio this week in preparation for the Fourth of July, but they’re illegal to use in the city limits and parts of unincorporated Bexar County.
Officials encourage fans of pyrotechnics to enjoy one of several professional fireworks displays planned for the Fourth.
Use of fireworks in San Antonio without a professional license is a Class C misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $2,000. To report a reckless use of fireworks in the city, call the non-emergency number: 210-207-7273.
Under state law, fireworks cannot be discharged within 600 feet of any church, hospital, school or college. Sale and use of fireworks is prohibited within 100 feet where flammable liquids, gas or fireworks are stored. Fireworks also cannot be used in or from a vehicle or thrown at a vehicle.
Fire and law enforcement officials also have the ability to charge someone with arson if they recklessly cause a fire that damages a structure or other property such as a motor vehicle, according to the Bexar County Fire Marshal’s Office. A conviction under the law can result in a fine up to $10,000 and jail time.
