Timeline: Days ahead of deadly stabbing of beloved Las Palapas founder

The investigation into the murder of the founder of Las Palapas, Ron Acosta, continues. The beloved businessman was allegedly brutally stabbed by a relative at his home on the Northside of San Antonio on Tuesday, July 1, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Acosta, 78, was stabbed multiple times with a knife by a relative, 39-year-old David Ruiz, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by MySA. The California relative was in San Antonio after the Acosta family invited him to stay with them. Here’s a timeline of the tragic murder:

David Ruiz visits San Antonio

Ruiz contacted one of Acosta’s sons before the deadly attack, according to court documents. Acosta’s son invited Ruiz to stay with him in San Antonio, which Ruiz accepted and drove from California to San Antonio. On Monday, July 30, Ruiz called Acosta’s son and told him he was two hours away from the city and was going to stay overnight at that location, the arrest affidavit stated.

The following day, Acosta called Ruiz and told him to stay at his house. The court document stated a family group chat confirmed Acosta had arrived at his house and there was a plan to meet up with other family members. SAPD did not disclose how Ruiz was related to the Acosta family. However, the San Antonio Express-News reported Ruiz was Acosta’s nephew.

Tragedy ensues

SAPD Chief William McManus said an argument occurred between Ruiz and Acosta around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Police said officials were called to the scene after a housekeeper found Acosta with multiple stab wounds in the garage of the home in the 19200 block of Reata Trail. She told police her boss had blood all around him and that she couldn’t control the bleeding, according to SAPD…
