Council members want a free hand to push new policies. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has other ideas.

A trio of San Antonio City Council members is chafing at an effort by Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones to change — unilaterally — how they propose new policies, programs and laws.

Marc Whyte, Marina Alderete Gavito and Teri Castillo called on Jones this week to “go through the proper channels” if she wants to change the way council members submit policy proposals, known formally as council consideration requests and informally as CCRs. The requests are one of the main avenues for council members to flex their power to get things done.

“If you wish to change the CCR procedures, we request you go through the proper channels … and bring forth your proposed recommendations to the full Council for consideration and a vote,” the three council members said in a Wednesday memo to Jones…
