$36K in food stamp benefits stolen from San Antonio refugees

Thousands of dollars in food benefits have been stolen from San Antonio refugees, according to the local Center for Refugee Services.

The nonprofit on Wurzbach Road supports legally resettled refugees as they adjust to life in the U.S. by helping them learn English, find jobs, access healthcare, and apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Since June 1, the center has documented $19,449 in unauthorized transactions from the Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) accounts of clients. Twenty-five families — 169 people — have lost funds, according to data obtained by the San Antonio Express-News…
