As San Antonio expands beyond the land of Loop 1604, so do the food options. Though Potranco Road is lined with more fast-food joints than anything else, tucked away inside an unassuming gas station is a quirky little pizza shop worth discovering. Sofia’s Pizzeria, a family-owned gem, has been highly praised by many of my neighbors in Redbird Ranch. As a newcomer to the area, I decided to see for myself whether it truly lived up to the hype.
Parking is limited due to the shop’s location in a gas station strip center right off Potranco Road near Highway 211, but a few indoor tables are available for those dining in. With football season on the horizon, at least one TV inside helps fans stay connected to the game. Arriving early for pickup isn’t an issue — staff are happy to offer curbside service, inviting customers to wait in their car while the order is brought out.
The pizza arrived piping hot, filling the car with an irresistible aroma. Even after the drive home, it stayed warm and perfectly cheesy, with that signature New York-style fold intact. The crust delivered that unmistakable brick oven flavor — crispy, smoky, and satisfying. And, as a bonus, there were plenty of leftovers to enjoy for lunch the next day.
