I was looking up the history of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church next to Travis Park and came across conflicting stories of the bell at the church. Wikipedia and other sources tell me the church bell was made from the melted-down “Come and Take It” cannon that Sam Maverick discovered had been buried, either on his property or at the Alamo.
However, on the Handbook of Texas website entry for St. Mark’s, it states that the bell was created from a melted-down cannon from 1813, which would date it to the Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara expedition against the Spanish Government in 1813 and the Battle of Medina.
Do you know what the correct origin of the bell is and whether there is proof regarding the “Come and Take It” story about the bell?…
