Alligator Garden owners closed park, packed up their reptiles 50 years ago

It was 50 years ago this month that dozens of alligators were sent packing from San Antonio.

Alligator Garden, a popular attraction for families where kids could ride atop an alligator for 10 cents, closed down after 23 years of operation near the Witte Museum, just outside Brackenridge Park.

Founders Bill and Vera Kimbrell, tired of the grind of running a business, decided it was time to call it quits. The couple moved the facility’s 32 alligators to Arkansas, donating the reptiles to an alligator park in Hot Springs, newspaper archives show…
