First look at San Antonio’s charming new mini golf course in historic district

More details are giving a sneak peek at the mini golf course coming to the Pearl this fall as the project gets underway, showing what the course will look like and what visitors can expect.

The $250,000 project was first filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration on Monday, July 28, with construction set to begin on Friday, August 1. Now, documents from the city’s Historic and Design Review Commission show that the 6,700-square-foot course will feature historic Pearl elements, extra shade from palm trees and callbacks to Texas history on what was previously a paved parking area near the 1939 Garage Building. Across the street is Stable Hall, a newly-opened concert venue reworked from historic stables.

A breezeway fence inspired by the one at Full Goods Diner will provide some privacy, according to the plan. Another privacy wall will be made from historic brewery industrial pieces. Connecting each hole on the course will be tile walkways reminiscent of the tiles inside the Cellar building, and an entry archway will be built from bricks ordered to match the Pearl’s own. Other features like wagon wheels and stained glass will pay homage to “the land that was once used as Missions and farmland along the river before Pearl was even there” and “bars that served [Pearl Brewery’s] beers for decades.”

As with any mini golf course, it wouldn’t be complete without some water features and props. A limestone waterfall will be built with the tag line “from the country of 1100 springs,” similar to that which was emblazoned on cans of Pearl beer. Miniature replicas of San Antonio icons such as the Pearl Brewery itself, the Tower of the Americas, the Alamo and others will be found around the course, according to a rendering. According to the plans, this is meant to echo a course built in Gruene, which featured cowboy boots, Gruene Hall and the Gruene water tower…
