San Antonio nurse alleges she was fired for reporting fraud at nursing home

A San Antonio nurse alleges she was fired from the nursing home where she worked in retaliation for reporting billing fraud and for cooperating with a state investigation into patient-care and safety violations at the facility.

Valeen Guzman has sued Parklane West Healthcare Center and its California holding company, the Ensign Group Inc. for unlawful retaliation seeking more than $1 million in damages. The suit also names as a defendant Sonterra Health Center, a sister facility where she also worked.

The Ensign Group, which has independent subsidiaries that provide nursing, senior living and rehabilitative services at more than 300 facilities with nearly 37,000 beds, did not respond to an email seeking comment on the lawsuit…
