Jury convicts San Antonio father of beating 12-year-old son to death

A Bexar County jury has convicted a man of fatally beating his 12-year-old son and forcing him to perform exercises until he collapsed and died.

Derrick Coles, 35, was found guilty of four counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury after the jury deliberated for a little over an hour. Coles was also found guilty of a lesser charge for recklessly causing injury to a child.

His punishment, to be decided by the judge on Oct. 20, could be up to 99 years in prison. Authorities have also charged Coles’ wife, Kapri Cheatom, in the boy’s death, and she is awaiting trial…
