Change is coming to KSAT 12’s sports desk. Nick Mantas, the station’s sports editor and on-air personality, revealed he will sign off for the last time on August 29. After two years in San Antonio, Mantas is moving to Houston to become a sports anchor and reporter at KPRC 2, beginning September 2. While heading to a bigger TV market such as Houston is always something exciting for TV broadcasters, saying goodbye to the city you called home for awhile is always difficult.
“The vibe of San Antonio is what makes it so special and hard to leave. From the friends you’ll meet on the River Walk, to the stories you can share at Friendly Spot or Bruno’s, the easy-going nature of everyone you meet makes life feel more relaxed and simplified,” Mantas told MySA.
He recalls some of his favorite pastimes in San Antonio as exploring new restaurants and taking peaceful weekend morning walks along the River Walk. Mantas says he and his fiancée are “that couple with coffees in hand,” savoring quiet mornings downtown, memories he’ll always cherish. As he prepares for his move to Houston, he added that the toughest part will be saying goodbye to his colleagues at KSAT 12.
“I’ll miss the people the most. Often in this business you’re moving from story to story and the people on your team working with you on tight daily deadlines, become your family. For me, our team at KSAT, especially the sports team, those are the people who made me feel right at home,” he said. “They welcomed in and helped me grow as a reporter and a journalist. Huge thank you to Andrew Wilson, Larry Ramirez, Daniel Villanueva, Mary Rominger, Mark Mendez, Adam Higgins and so many more people who made our day-to-day feel fun and exciting throughout the stress of a sports season.”
Before joining KSAT 12, Mantas worked as a freelance sports reporter and sports anchor with iHeart Radio and spent three years as a weekend sports anchor and reporter at WLNS-TV, according to his KSAT bio. His sports broadcasting career began in Texas at KTXS in Abilene, where he served as a weekend sports anchor and reporter. Now, he says he’s excited to extend those Texas roots from San Antonio to Houston…
