Tiny Texas town’s transformation into mega data center hub sparks concerns

Microsoft is further expanding its footprint in the San Antonio metropolitan area. Medina County officials announced Wednesday, August 20, new details on the site’s activity and its expected impact on residents.

Public filings show two data centers — labeled SAT 93 and SAT 94 — are slated for County Road 381, South of FM 471. The address places it roughly one mile from San Antonio’s Lost Resort RV Ranch and less than five miles from two local elementary schools. Both data centers are expected to cost $350 million each to build and take up approximately 245,000 square feet.

Medina County ESD 1 Fire Agency said they met with County Commissioners to discuss the game plan ahead of starting construction on the land, which was once a grassy area with shrubs, trees, and old back roads. The agency also visited an existing data site at Potranco Road and FM 471, which is owned by Quality Technology Services, to become more informed on “the challenges experienced at these large construction sites,” and how to mitigate any emergencies that could arise.

The look of Microsoft centers can vary, but the company says they typically reflect the look of windowless warehouses. Each contains extensive fencing around its perimeters for safety and security purposes. Public records cite that construction on the two, single story data centers is expected to wrap up by June, 15, 2027.

A few community members in a private Redbird Ranch neighborhood Facebook group worry the developments will cause major traffic on streets that are already among the most congested in the state. The neighborhood lies in between Bexar and Medina County lines…
