Longtime Mexican joint brings $10K taco eating contest to San Antonio

How many bean and cheese tacos can you eat in 10 minutes? If the answer is a lot, then an upcoming eating competition headed for San Antonio might be right up your alley.

Taco Cabana is partnering with Major League Eating and Dr Pepper to host the World Taco Eating Championship on Saturday, September 20. The competition is set to begin around noon at the Austin Highway location of Taco Cabana, according to a news release. Contestants will be tasked with eating as many bean and cheese tacos as they can in a 10-minute window while a Guinness World Records judge looks on in case any official records are broken.

The World Taco Eating Championship will hand out a total of $10,000 in cash prizes for participants who top the leaderboard, with a $5,000 prize for first place, $2,500 for second and $1,250 for third. The cash prizes for fourth, fifth and sixth place are $600, $400 and $250, respectively. The competition coincides with Taco Cabana’s 47th anniversary, which opened its doors in San Antonio in 1978.
