These San Antonio bars are ready for their close-up on the big screen

Quite a few movies have scenes that were filmed here in San Antonio — Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Selena and Miss Congeniality, to name some favorites. And come November, one Austin-based filmmaker is planning to shoot a horror flick here in the Alamo City.

On Saturday, August 23, Austin-based filmmaker William Instone made a post in the San Antonio Filmmakers Facebook group calling for San Antonio bars that could pass as college hangout spots for their upcoming horror movie shoot. Though MySA attempted to contact Instone about the project and did not receive a response, many local directors sounded off in the comments with some good options, listing bars that have a moody and grungy feel, campy spots with an ’80s or horror movie theme, and some places that just have a fun, youthful vibe. Here’s the list, according to commenters.

Let’s Be Honest

One comment mentioned Let’s Be Honest, an LGBTQ+ bar located at 1602 N. Main Ave., San Antonio, TX 78212. A spokesperson told MySA in a direct message that while no filmmakers have reached out, “if they were looking for queer representation in the movie we would be the right place.” Let’s Be Honest is known for hosting drag brunches featuring local drag performer Kristi Waters, and the vibes are everything glittery, colorful and fun. So while Let’s Be Honest doesn’t have the horror elements of some of the other spots on this list, it definitely brings the camp factor.

Be Kind & Rewind

One commenter mentioned Be Kind & Rewind, a somewhat recently opened bar on the River Walk. Inside, this bar is an ’80s-inspired dream, reminiscent of the prime decade of slasher films. The bar located at 115 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78205, has even transformed into a horror-themed bar before, so if you’re looking for spooky energy in a bustling, downtown area, this is the spot. MySA reached out for comment, but did not hear back at the time of publishing.

Zombies Bar

Another commenter added Zombies Bar to the conversation. Zombies Bar, located at 4202 Thousand Oaks Drive, San Antonio, TX 78217, is a horror-themed karaoke bar with a menu that features your standard bar fare like beer and frozen margaritas — but also Specimen Shots, Syringe Shots and Blood Bags. MySA reached out to the bar for comment.

Fitzgerald’s Bar

Named by another commenter, Fitzgerald’s Bar, located at 437 McCarty Road, Suite 101, San Antonio, TX 78216, has the perfect moody vibe for a horror flick. Live music (lots of rock and metal, at that) meets cozy atmosphere in this spot on San Antonio’s Northside, making it a good location for a scene not unlike the fights that happen at The Bronze in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. MySA has contacted the bar for comment…
