Bexar County animal control officers can now give you a ticket

If your dog roams the neighborhood without a leash — or worse, attacks someone — Bexar County’s animal control officers can now write you a ticket.

County commissioners approved funding last week to enable animal control officers to cite pet owners in the county’s unincorporated areas. It’s part of an effort to curb dog attacks and promote rabies vaccinations after an increase in dog maulings in the San Antonio area in recent years.

Although county animal control officers technically had the authority to issue tickets, only the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office could do so in practice because the county’s online ticket system wasn’t set up to include the animal control department…
