San Antonio 80-year-old dies while serving prison sentence in fraud scheme

An 80-year-old San Antonio man has died while serving an 18-month prison sentence for his role in a financing scheme.

Earl Roberts Sr. died in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons on Sept. 8 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., after suffering from numerous ailments. He had been incarcerated at the nearby U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners.

Roberts had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud and was sentenced in May 2024 by U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia, who handed down a prison term well below the guideline range of 33 to 41 months…
