The Pentagon wants out of the grocery business, so it’s calling on the industry for ideas on what to do with 178 commissaries it runs on military bases across the country, including three in San Antonio and another 10 spread across Texas.
As part of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s overhaul of the military, the Pentagon put out a “request for information” last week seeking pitches from commercial grocers on taking over the base stores, known as commissaries.
The department also will consider closing “all or a portion” of existing commissaries if a commercial chain has nearby stores that can offer the same 23.7% discount that the military markets provide…
