Mayor floats maxing out water utility’s financial contribution to city to help close budget gap

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has proposed taking more money from the San Antonio Water System to help close the city’s looming budget shortfalls.

The city-owned utility is required to transfer 4% of its gross revenue to the city’s general fund. But under a 1992 ordinance, the City Council could raise it to 5% — a move SAWS’ top official said could require future rate increases to sustain.

The utility is already expected to seek City Council’s approval for a rate hike in the next few months…
