San Antonio has lost several crucial Dairy Queen restaurants in the last few years, including one on the Southside that shuttered in 2023 after a 45-year run. The Dairy Queen that stood on the busy intersection of Jackson-Keller Road and West Avenue for decades called it quits in October 2024, but the building wasn’t empty for long.
A few months after Dairy Queen moved out of its longtime home, a different concept began to take shape in its place, transforming the chain restaurant into a Mexican Restaurant under the name Las Tapatias de Jalisco. The new business announced its opening on social media in May 2025.
Like Dairy Queen, Las Tapatias de Jalisco has a drive-thru for fast, easy ordering. Las Tapatias is also part of a restaurant chain, though its local scale differs greatly from Dairy Queen’s national reach. Two other Las Tapatias restaurants are open in San Antonio, one on South St. Mary’s Street across from Brackenridge High School, and the other is on 1619 Goliad Road.
Las Tapatias de Jalisco offers an assortment of Mexican dishes, including tacos, tortas, burritos, gorditas, quesadillas, chalupas, nachos and enchiladas. The restaurant also carries Mexican sodas, fresh lemonade and alcoholic drinks like margaritas, micheladas and beer. According to Google, the Jackson-Keller location is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday…
