Uvalde and Bexar County officials are refusing to release records related to the fiery death of Regina Santos-Aviles, an aide to U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, asserting that disclosure of the information would interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation.
That position appears inconsistent with previous statements by authorities that Santos-Aviles, 35, immolated herself in the backyard of her home in Uvalde on Sept. 13, and that no one else was involved. Uvalde Police Chief Homer E. Delgado said shortly after the death that there was “no indication of foul play.”
