S.A. attorney loses trial in battle with former pal over River Walk building

San Antonio attorney Martin Phipps lost a nearly two-week jury trial that pitted him against a longtime friend in a bitter battle over a River Walk office building.

Phipps not only failed to regain title to the building that bears his name at 102 Ninth St., the jury on Friday directed him to pay more than $1.2 million in damages and attorneys’ fees to Fort Worth-area businessman Darren Connel’s company. The fees could climb by as much as $143,000 if Phipps loses on appeal.
