New program will help struggling renters in unincorporated Bexar County

Bexar County residents facing eviction can get help making their rental payments under a program that county commissioners approved this week.

The pilot initiative will give struggling residents funds for missed rent payments, first month’s rent, and security or utility deposits. Only those who live within the county but outside of San Antonio — and can’t benefit from the city’s rental assistance program — will qualify.

County Judge Peter Sakai, who spearheaded the program with Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert, sees it as key to helping residents in rapidly growing unincorporated areas who are “feeling the squeeze of a challenging economy.”…
