East Side charter school to close after TEA denies renewal over low academic ratings

SAN ANTONIO — A public charter school on the city’s East Side will close its doors at the direction the Texas Education Agency (TEA) due to low academic performance ratings.

Since August 2022, Essence Preparatory Public School has served kindergarten through eighth-grade students. “Essence Prep was created to meet black and brown children’s educational, social, and emotional needs and will show that home zip codes are not predictors of educational success,” the school’s website says.

In a letter sent home to families, the school says they were informed on Thursday by the TEA that their charter would not be renewed…
