Baptist Health System sues United Healthcare over payments for ER care

Baptist Health System of San Antonio is suing United Healthcare Insurance Co., alleging its hospitals were underpaid on claims for emergency-room treatment for individuals who have health coverage through insurance exchanges.

The Baptist hospitals are not in United Healthcare’s network for emergency care under those plans, but they are required by federal law to render care to anyone — regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

United Healthcare is obligated to pay for those emergency-room services, but the two sides “have not reached agreement on the appropriate rate of reimbursement,” the lawsuit says…
