After 35 years at KENS 5, Raymond Silva points to AI for sudden departure

After 40 years in broadcast, a longtime San Antonio TV director says his “tenure is coming to an end” as AI threatens positions like his.

Raymond Silva, Emmy Award-winning broadcast director at KENS 5, announced the news of his departure in a Monday, January 5, Facebook post. He said after 40 years in TV overall, 35 of those spent at KENS 5, the decision to leave wasn’t his own or the station’s. Instead, he said the company is “moving in a direction utilizing a system which incorporates AI technology along with automation to eliminate all directors.”

A spokesperson for TEGNA told MySA, “We are investing in technology and people to upgrade our newsrooms and modernize our newsrooms to deliver multiplatform content through a cloud-based technology that is capable of controlling multiple systems for broadcast and streaming.”…
