2021 winter storm exposed grid weakness; part of Texas’ solution is being built near S.A.

With more utility-scale battery storage on the grid, Aaron Zubaty says, the deadly trajectory of Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 could have been altered.

“If we would have had these batteries online at the time, Uri wouldn’t have happened,” the CEO and founder of renewable energy company Eolian L.P. says of the multi-day deep freeze that led to blackouts and nearly 250 deaths.

Now, just south of San Antonio, his company is developing the state’s largest battery site to help ensure the Texas electric grid doesn’t suffer a similar failure again by standing ready to provide electricity when it’s needed…
