Alamo acquires rare cannon from 1836 battle

SAN ANTONIO – The Alamo has added a rare piece of Texas history to its collection with the acquisition of a cannon used during the 1836 Battle of the Alamo.

The announcement comes near the 190th anniversary of the iconic battle, which took place on March 6, 1836. The discovery was revealed Thursday during an episode of “Stories Bigger Than Texas: The Alamo Podcast.”

The swivel cannon weighs around 90 pounds and measures about three feet in length. Its story traces back to 1852, when Samuel Maverick, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who was present during the siege, built a home near the northwest corner of the Alamo’s fort wall.
