San Antonio Independent School District is addressing a case involving one of its middle school teachers, who was arrested on charges of indecent exposure to a child. Andrew Smierciak, 42, a teacher at Poe Middle School, is accused by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office of exposing himself to a 9-year-old girl in a Northwest Bexar County neighborhood. KSAT reports that the incident occurred Friday afternoon.
According to News 4 San Antonio, a nearby neighbor heard the child’s screams and saw Smierciak’s vehicle leaving the area. The neighbor followed the car, confronted Smierciak in a parking lot, obtained his license plate number, and reported it to authorities, which led to the teacher’s arrest. Bexar County officials noted that confronting a suspect directly is not recommended.
Both the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the San Antonio Independent School District are handling the case seriously. SAISD told KSAT that they have informed the Texas Education Agency and confirmed that the employee will not return to campus.
