Strong storms with possible hail could hit Texas on Valentine’s Day. Here’s an update.

Flower orders have been placed and dinner reservations are locked in, but Mother Nature could add some uncertainty to Valentine’s Day plans. Forecast data indicate that a storm system could bring heavy rain, strong winds and even some hail to parts of Texas this weekend.

Don’t cancel any already-made plans, but do keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to adjust as needed. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which will be strong, are expected to move into parts of Texas late Friday, with activity expanding across a larger portion of the state on Saturday.

Atmospheric setup

A robust area of low atmospheric pressure in the eastern Pacific Ocean is expected to move eastward over the next three to four days. As it does, the system will tap into a deep volume of Gulf moisture Friday and Saturday, resulting in widely scattered showers and storms.

Low to moderate atmospheric instability is also expected, meaning that a widespread severe weather outbreak is unlikely. However, some strong to severe storms will still be possible across much of the state, including San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and anywhere in between…
