Texas woman sentenced to 11 years, ordered to pay nearly $1 million in deadly human smuggling case

DEL RIO, Texas (KWTX) — A San Antonio woman received an 11-year federal prison sentence Jan. 30 for her role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in death and generated millions in illegal profits.

Erica Aracely Carmona, 36, was sentenced to 132 months in prison and ordered to pay $955,350 in restitution for conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death, according to court documents. She was arrested Aug. 23, 2022, and pleaded guilty Dec. 19, 2022.

According to authorities, Carmona was a member of a smuggling organization that transported illegal aliens to San Antonio from the Eagle Pass area.
