SAPD suspension: Officer was holding phone during 124 mph chase that ended in crash

A San Antonio police officer has been suspended after initiating a high-speed chase on the North Side without notifying his superiors. The chase ended when he crashed his patrol car into a pickup truck.

Officer Kirby Painter agreed to a 30-day suspension for violating department procedures on vehicle pursuits, according to San Antonio Police Department disciplinary records. The suspension began Jan. 2.

The suspension stemmed from a chase that began just after 4 p.m. Aug. 3, when Kirby was driving on Loop 410 and spotted a gray sedan speeding, a disciplinary report says. He activated his patrol car’s emergency lights, but the sedan exited the highway and did not stop…
