Top-rated pizza joint in San Antonio serves up affordable pies for $10

San Antonio’s Il Forno is a serene spot to grab an excellent wood-fired pizza just a few steps down from the busy intersection where South Flores, Nogalitos and Cevallos meet. The pizza joint often ranks high on annual top pizza lists, and more recently, the restaurant added a new $10 deal that keeps its praiseworthy pizza affordable.

I stopped by Il Forno on a Wednesday afternoon, the only day of the week that the eatery offers its new pizza special — a one-topping pizza that comes with red sauce and mozzarella for just $10. Outside, Il Forno has a garden-like patio entrance sprinkled with greenery and stringed lights, while the interior is more rustic and simple, with a small open kitchen where you can see pizzas getting fired in a wood-powered oven.

Here, customers order at the counter, receive a number and find their own seats, so I did just that, opting for the $10 Wednesday deal. For my single topping, I had 12 different options across the cheese, meats and veggies categories, and I ultimately decided on soppressata, a type of Italian salami that I believe is made in-house. Once I paid, I found my way over to a table near a window where I watched quietly as the chef on duty prepared my pizza.

All pizzas at Il Forno are 12 inches, which, for a single person, is a substantial amount to eat in one sitting. However, once I got started, it was incredibly hard to stop, as every part of this pie was delectable. The sauce had so much flavor, and the crust had those burnt bubbles around the pizza’s rim that are fun to chomp on. The soppressata added a bold, salty taste to the pizza that blended right in with the mozzarella.

This deal is a no-brainer for folks who already love Il Forno, and it’s a perfect excuse to try the restaurant out for first-timers. The pizza is magnificent, the vibes are easy-going and the $10 deal is available all day on Wednesdays for dine-in or to-go orders…
