Son of Michelle Barrientes Vela goes on trial, accused of attacking, choking police

The son of former Bexar County Constable Michelle Barrientes Vela went on trial Tuesday on charges of attacking police officers and EMTs as they tried to give aid to his girlfriend, who was having a seizure.

Michael Barrientes Vela, 23, is charged with assault of a peace officer, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. His older brothers, Anthony Librado Barrientes Vela, 27, and Carlos Barrientes Vela, 31, face the same charge in connection with the incident. Their trials have not yet been scheduled.

Prosecutors said all three brothers attacked emergency personnel and police officers on April 29, 2024, in the 1200 block of Bandera Road in Northwest San Antonio, a stretch lined with homes, apartments, auto parts stores, bars and bingo halls…
