SAN DIEGO (KUSI/FOX 5) — The San Diego Unified School District is preparing students and staff for the intense heat wave sweeping San Diego County by implementing its “Hot Weather Plan.”
Officials with the district say one of the biggest challenges is that children don’t know how to tell whether they’re suffering from heat exhaustion.
“It’s important because our number one concern and our goal is for students to learn in a safe environment. So we’re doing all we can to monitor that, to ensure that our students still have a safe place to learn,” said RN Jennifer Alfonso. “One of the obvious things is the flushed cheeks, you know, and then the thirst. And the most important thing is we want students to feel safe to tell any staff member, to tell their teacher, to tell our staff in our health offices that they don’t feel well. They might feel dizzy; they might feel nauseated.”…
