ENCINITAS, Calif. (KUSI/FOX 5) — You may not know her name, but you have probably seen her art all around San Diego County.
For more than six decades, North County sculptor Manuelita Brown has made it her mission to answer life’s “casting call.” In her Encinitas art studio, filled with bowls of clay and surrounded by works in progress that aren’t always perfect, the 86-year-old is creating something meant to outlast all of us.
“There are times when I close my eyes and just touch,” Brown said. “Sometimes it’s an opportunity to make something better. I think of my sculptures as communicating with generations yet unborn, that’s one of the reasons I love bronze.”
Her work begins in clay, where it can still change with the touch of a hand. But eventually, it becomes stronger, and, after hours of patience, a story and her artwork become permanent…
