Hurricane Rachel triggers high surf, flood advisories in Southern California

Dangerous surf conditions from another Pacific hurricane have prompted officials to issue beach hazard statements for Southern California beaches Tuesday.

Hurricane Rachel is currently spinning about 500 miles off the coast of Mexico and is not expected to make landfall, but its effects will be felt in Southern California this week.

“What we have is the significant swell energy coming from the distant tropical cyclone. Rachel is going to be bringing the potential for beach erosion and powerful rip currents that could be deadly potentially. That’s why you have to follow the direction of lifeguards very closely,” National Weather Service meteorologist Dr. Ariel Cohen said…
