Southern California cities shatter daily rainfall records after super soaker rainstorm

San Diego experienced unprecedented rainfall today, with the San Diego Airport recording 2.70 inches of rain, making it the fifth wettest day on record at the airport.

The city is still under the influence of a storm, and there are expectations that the total rainfall could increase further if any of the island banding showers over the coastal waters move over the airport in the remaining hours.

The substantial rainfall has shattered several daily records across different locations in the region. Among the notable records broken are:

  • Campo: Recorded 3.22 inches, surpassing the previous record of 1.68 inches in 2010.
  • El Cajon: Accumulated 2.74 inches, exceeding the previous record of 2.48 inches set in 1909.
  • San Diego Airport: Received 2.70 inches, breaking the previous record of 1.53 inches set in 1967.
  • Oceanside Harbor: Registered 2.10 inches, surpassing the prior record of 0.98 inches in 2010.
  • Thermal: Recorded 0.89 inches, exceeding the previous record of 0.25 inches in 2010.

These records highlight the extraordinary nature of the rainfall, with some locations experiencing more than double the amount recorded during previous record-setting events. The heavy rainfall has led to localized flooding and disruptions across the region.
