Fatal crash prompts lane closures on I-5

SAN DIEGO — A driver was killed Thursday morning in a traffic collision on southbound Interstate 5, south of Del Mar Heights Road, authorities said.

The crash was first reported at 4:16 a.m., Salvador Castro with the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Authorities say the driver of a silver Toyota Tundra, a 39-year-old man from Westminster, Calif., crashed into the back of a white Kenworth/Utility truck-tractor/trailer combination on I-5 southbound. First responders confirmed the man dead at the scene.

The crash investigation caused two right lanes of I-5 southbound to close, but it has since been reopened, according to Caltrans.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a toxicology report to see if driving under the influence was a factor in the crash. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification from the next of kin.
