A 54-year-old male inmate died at the San Diego Central Jail on February 4, 2024, leading to an investigation by the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit. The man’s identity remains undisclosed as authorities are still notifying his family. A Family Liaison Officer is assisting the family.

The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. during medication distribution. A deputy and a nurse found the man in need of further medical evaluation. However, he became unresponsive during transportation for the evaluation. Rescue efforts were initiated and paramedics were called.

Despite immediate medical attention and hospital transportation, the man died. The first responders attempted lifesaving support, but were unsuccessful. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of his death.

The man had been in custody since June 26, 2023, after his arrest on felony warrants related to a previous arrest for Felony Vandalism. He was reportedly homeless at the time of his arrest.

The Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) has been informed of the incident. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit will investigate the death, as is standard for all in-custody deaths. Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura of the Homicide Unit is the media contact for this case.
