With the memory of a panga-style boat coming ashore at Windansea Beach and its passengers running to the street fresh in people’s minds, the La Jolla Town Council discussed the incident at length during its Feb. 8 meeting.
With law enforcement representatives on hand to answer questions, topics raised included what to do if someone sees a similar incident taking place and what law enforcement is doing to respond.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports, the Joint Harbor Operations Center notified CBP law enforcement personnel of a suspicious vessel carrying multiple people near Windansea Beach at about 7:30 a.m. Jan. 25.
A video circulated on social media showed the boat, filled with people, heading through the waves straight to shore as several onlookers watched from the bluff. A pickup truck and a van were parked on the street, possibly awaiting the passengers. Soon, at least eight people emerged at the top of the bluff as a law enforcement vehicle headed up the street with its overhead lights flashing. The people then ran up a side street and the video ended.
