Why is it that there continues to be a pattern of incompetence in the management of our jail system? The recent story highlights, again, the level of inhumane “care” for incarcerated people. The disregard by Sheriff Martinez to the numerous suggested improvements is appalling. The failure to ensure drugs do not get into the hands of prisoners to the lack of professionalism by what appears to be all jail staff is on her watch. We are not a Third World country. She should immediately implement remedies to the management and condition of our jail system or move on from her job and allow someone else to do it.

U-T reporter Jeff McDonald has continued to expose the simple facts that jails are not financially or physically capable of housing human beings experiencing addiction and mental health problems. San Diego has drug court, but it also needs a facility expressly for folks who test positive for drugs at intake. Currently, it’s a catch-and-release program because of the continued lawsuits issued by families whose family members have died while in the care or lack of care of our managed care facilities mistakenly know as “jail.” Either jails step up their level of care or we create a facility that can deal with these medically fragile individuals at intake.
