SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego beachgoers are urged to take precaution on Monday as strong surf is expected to create dangerous rip currents along the region’s coast, according to the National Weather Service.

A beach hazards statement was issued for San Diego County by the weather agency Sunday night, ahead of the strong surf’s peak.

According to NWS, waves of about three to five feet tall are expected with sets to six feet through 7 p.m. Monday. The heightened surf should mostly subside by Tuesday.

While the beach hazards statement is in place, dangerous rip currents are a risk for swimmers and surfers, NWS said. San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards are encouraging beachgoers to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.

As the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains , rip currents, which are narrow, localized currents, are caused by breaking waves piling up along the shoreline as the water retreats.
