City of San Diego drafting plans to protect beach communities from rising sea levels

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — City leaders are looking into ways to protect San Diego beaches from rising sea levels. The Coastal Resilience plan outlines ways to prevent further erosion at the coast.

The city received grant funding to develop the Coastal Resilience Master Plan , creating nature based solutions to tackle rising sea levels along San Diego’s coast.

“Who doesn’t love going to the beach? And we’re going to have to put in money and effort on a constant basis to keep them,” said geologist, Patt Abbott.

According to the city, the draft proposed concept of the plan includes designs for six locations including Tourmaline Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, La Jolla Shores and Mission Beach.

San Diego beaches are facing many challenges. In addition to dealing with rising sea levels, Abbott says sand is often swept into canyons off the San Diego coast and never resurfaces.
