Red Sox star gives RHP Josh Winckowski a huge compliment after Sunday outing

On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox were able to defeat the San Diego Padres 4-1 to avoid a dreaded series sweep, and their pitching was a big reason for the victory.

Red Sox starter Josh Winckowski had a strong outing, as he kept the Padres from scoring a single run in his four innings of work while allowing just four hits.

This was Winckowski’s second appearance and first start since being recalled from Triple-A Worcester after being sent down in early May to work on his swing-and-miss pitches.

After the win, Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers had some high praise for the starter after another solid effort.

“He’s one of the best pitchers we have,” Dever said (via. MassLive ). “I don’t know why he was in Triple-A. But I feel like he’s a very good pitcher and I’m hoping he keeps doing what he did today and stays with us the rest of the year.”

On the year, Winckowski has a 2.80 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 14 appearances (four starts). Since returning from Triple-A, he’s allowed two runs on 10 hits and a walk over 11 innings.
