MTS board votes to scale back transit expansion

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — On Thursday, the Metropolitan Transit System board voted to scale back transit expansion in San Diego.

Originally, MTS planned to spend $209 million on service upgrades, funds that came from a California program aimed at bolstering the transit system statewide. The money would be used for modernizing the Orange Line, among other upgrades.

The board voted, however, to use more of the funds toward closing projected budget deficits — $51 million more than originally planned. This leaves less for those intended service upgrades.

Will the promise of new routes, shorter wait times and extended service hours still be met? MTS still has plans to make it happen, though transit riders can now expect those enhancements to be delayed.

MTS is now looking at securing grants to make it possible.
