Teacher runs 350 miles for former student

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Kevin Hopp has a love affair with running.

“Normally, I run about 100 miles per week,” Hopp said.

The 53-year-old loves jogging so much, he rarely takes a day off.

“Honeslty, every single holiday is a plan to run with a group friends,” Hopp said.

Two years ago, the Diegueno Middle School cross country coach took it to the next level, running 350 miles throughout San Diego in just a week’s time.

It is all done to honor the memory of his former student Molly.

“She would come in at lunch or after school for help or just to talk and completely bonded,” Hopp said.

After high school, Molly died due to an accidental overdose at the age of 28. Hopp is making sure to carry on her memory.

“Now I continue on with her mom as a founder of Molly’s Angels Foundation . Molly before she passed away, she wanted to start an organization to help people who couldn’t afford basically mental health counseling,” Hopp said.

Last year, the San Macros native ran 335 miles on Molly’s behalf, raising $10,000 in the process.
