Trash bags of fentanyl found in trunk of vehicle

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A traffic stop on Interstate 5 near San Clemente led to a major drug bust Thursday, according to U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector.

The situation unfolded around 4 p.m. when agents assigned to the San Clemente Border Patrol Station stopped a suspicious silver sedan traveling on the 5 freeway. During the stop, a trained K-9 alerted agents to the presence of narcotics.

During a secondary inspection of the vehicle’s trunk, agents discovered plastic-wrapped packages inside of black trash bags, something CBP said was consistent with the packaging of smuggled narcotics.

At that point, the suspected narcotics, vehicle, and driver — a man that was determined to be a U.S. citizen — were transported to a nearby Border Patrol station for further investigation. While at the station, agents removed 40 cellophane-wrapped packages containing blue pills.

Agents then tested the pills, which were positive for fentanyl. The total weight of the narcotics was 105 pounds. The driver and pills were turned over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for prosecution on state charges and the vehicle was seized by CBP.
